Coloring book and new school reference, together at last!
Description
The art of tattooing is a time honored tradition, with its designs steeped in rich history. Tim Pangburn, on the other hand, draws weird cartoons that don’t make a lot of sense. This coloring book is 50 full pages of new school tattoo designs, inspired by wildly eclectic influences.
Whether you want to color in a classic dagger with roses, or are feeling a little more adventurous and feeling like a shaved groundhog with antlers and three butts, this coloring book has it. Each design was hand drawn after Tim randomly selected subject matter through a combination of rolling dice, pointing at things with his eyes closed and pulling tiny slips of folded paper from a hat. Each design has a blank backside, so working in mediums such as marker won’t affect the next design. You can hang these on your fridge without shame, or maybe even sell your colored pages at a craft fair. But please don’t actually sell them at a craft fair. This stuff is copyrighted.
Tim’s influences originate in his obsession with comics and animation of the early 90’s. While the work presented here doesn’t directly imitate anyone, you can see the impact of those formative years. Simon Bisley’s run of Lobo, Marc Hansen’s Ralph Snart Adventures, Sergio Aragones’ Groo the Wander, and the animation of John Kricfalusi and Bill Plympton are all visible when you dissect Tim’s art, not to mention the influence of comic legends such as Bernie Wrightson and Barry Windsor-Smith.
Tim Pangburn has been tattooing since 1998, riding the tail end of first wave new school. He continually bucks trends, even if it’s the dumbest business move he can make. You know why? Because ol Tim is a rebel, a daredevil!
